National Darius Day!

TV Hits

December 2002

Darius reveals his hometown secrets – only in TV Hits

7.00 AM

Yay!  Darius is so excited when he leaves his hotel and heads into Edinburgh’s stormy weather. He’s back home in Scotland – and loads of fans have turned out to celebrate! A chorus of U2’s Beautiful Day greets the tour manager Johnnie, who explains Dazza’s well happy after a posh brekkie of salmon! What a way to start the day!

7.30 AM

A cheery Dazza calls home to arrange a quick visit but his mum’s laid low with the flu – and still a snoozin’.

He chats for a lil’ bit longer then finishes with a heartfelt, “I love you”.

“My poor mum works so hard,” Darius tells us. “I miss her. Plus, I’d do anything for her soup- it’s really simple but it tastes like a gourmet meal!”

8.00 AM

Dazza pulls up in front of the city’s Radio Forth. “I do get a tad nervous before interviews,” he ‘fesses. “I’m scared I’ll say something stupid like I did a few years ago.” Yikes! There’s, urm, a lot of nerves in this room!

8.20 AM

Darius meets the competition winners and all his fans – and gets a Forth One T-Shirt from DJ Darren. “Great!”  he laughs. “This can be my new pyjama top. I usually wear nothing in bed but it’s sooo cold now!”

Competition winner Vicky gets to ask Darius a special question. “If you were in Hear’Say what would you’ve done to stop the split?”  Darius thinks….”I wouldn’t have called the first single Pure and Simple – I’d have called it Dirty and Complicated instead!”

9.20 AM

“Being back in Edinburgh brings back loadsa memories of my student days,” says the tall one. “I’d wander down Leith Walk just as the sun was coming up. We’d have spent the night at someone’s house party and we’d stop off for breakfast on the way back to my flat!” And fact fans – Darius’ brother, Aria, now lives in that same Edinburgh flat while Darius rents out a posh pad in London.

11.00 AM

Now in his birthplace of Glasgow, Darius meets folks from BBC Scotland who are making a documentary about him. “I would love to take a break at some point to finish my degree,” he tells TV Hits. “I’d live in Glasgow so I could see my little brother Cyrus, who’s seven, grow up.”

12.20 PM

Back in the car, Darius listens to a great album – and it’s his own! “I have to work out the track listings,” he explains. “I just want people to love it!” He also calls his producer, Steve Lillywhite, to give him an update. “I did two B sides on Sunday!” he grins. “Both done in one go as well. Hurrah!”

1.30 PM

Darius meets the kids at Daldorch School for autistic children – and has a great time. “This is the best part of the day.” He says as he talks to 12 year old Shawn, who has problems communicating. Little does he know that just a few days later he’ll pick up a Tartan Clef Award from Nordoff Robbins for all his charity work!

3.00 PM

“If I wasn’t in the music biz, I’d like to work with kids,” says Darius later. “I’m too impatient for teaching, but I’d really love to be able to help in other ways. Kids bring out the best in me. It probably comes from my parents, They’re both doctors and very good at communicating with people. I used to love Saturday mornings cos my dad would take me on his hospital rounds. That was fun!”

3.30 PM

Time for a pub lunch! We choose The Osprey Inn cos it’s nice’n’toasty! Darius asks the chef what the freshest fish is. (that’s soul food for ya!)

5.30 PM

Glasgow’s Radio Clyde is the last stop of the day and Dazza gets a bit overwhelmed! “The public have given me a fab opportunity and I just want to thank them!”

6.58 PM

Woah! Is Ali G in da house? Darius decides to  practice his microphone technique, shouting “Big up to the Weegie (ie Glaswegian) massive!”

10.00 PM

After loadsa thank yous all round, Darius, Johnnie and radio plugger, Brendan are off through the blustery weather. Down in Newcastle,  the fans are already getting ready to camp outside the local radio station at a very early hour indeed – cos the breakfast show is expecting a very special guest……
